Thompson, Manitoba is the Northern most “city” in Manitoba.  We basically consider anything above 10,000 a city in Canada only because they are self sufficient enough to provide basic services for their citizens (sewer system, public transportation, University, etc).  It is considered the major hub for Northern Manitoba so you can be sure to find all of the amenities of a larger city here.  They even have a Taxi service that is quite decent if you ask me.  Unlike other areas of Canada, Thompson had settlers as early as 6000 BC.   The modern story for Thompson really does not begin until the mid-1950′s.  In 1967 it was finally incorporated as an actual town.  Even though it is considered the “Hub to the North” the population has been in a slight decline since the 1970′s.   In fact it was the 3rd largest city in Manitoba until 2011 when it slipped down to 5th settling in just under 13,000 people.  There are four radio stations and three television stations in Thompson.  Shaw Communication provides most if not all the local channels to its customers.  If you are looking for some good old Canadian past time you should go over to the Burntwood Curling Club where they have a 6-sheet curling rink.

You might look at the picture we have submitted for Airdrie and think to yourself, “Why haven’t I seen or heard of this place before?”  Well, chances are you have heard of Calgary and Airdrie is the suburbs for Calgary.  You might think of it as a separate town considering its 20 miles from downtown Calgary but really there is only 5 miles of farmland in between Calgary and Airdrie.   You just have to head north on Calgary-Edmonton Corridor Highway and the first town you will encounter Airdrie first.    It is considered a bedroom community and industrial centre.  They have a local bus system with Airdrie Transit along with a bus system that connects Airdrie with Calgary (InterCity Express or ICE).  The town was established back in the late 1880′s when the Calgary and Edmonton Railway was being established.  The original buildings were all railway buildings until 1901 when farmhouses started popping up.

Portage la Prairie is one of the most interesting cities I have ever been to.  According to Environment Canada they have the longest days during the summer months than any other city in Canada.  Its only about a 25 minute drive to Lake Manitoba which is not nearly as large as Lake Winnipeg but is far more populated with more attractions.  There are several towns around the lake (I would say more than 20) with Gas Stations, restaurants, and all kinds of other things.  Portage la Prairie is also home to McCain Foods and Simplot potato processing plants which support most of the towns economy along with providing McDonalds, Wendy’s, and various other restaurant chains.  They also have many attractions worth visiting if you get a chance after leaving Winnipeg:
