Calgary, Alberta – City Profile

Calgary is a unique city in Canada in that they have the most sunny days out of any major city in Canada.  This is due to how far south the city is located.  The further from the poles (North and South) the longer the sunny days are going to be.  It is located in a plains area but is still only 50 miles from the foothills of the Rockies.  In 1787 the area was mapped out by a cartographer named David Thompson.  Before Thompson, the only people to ever visit or live in the area were First Nations who were part of the Blackfoot Confederacy.  The RCMP became a permanent presence in 1875 and had orders to protect the western plains from whisky traders.  They were also protecting the fur trade at the time.

Calgary is a great mix between Innovation and Western Heritage.  They are very culturally diverse and I would say more so than most of the cities I have ever visited.  The City itself is really the gateway to the Rocky Mountains.  As far as the cities go, this one is no different than any other major city with all of the same services such as Major-Chain Restaurants, Gas Stations, Museums, Parks, Visitors Center, Malls, etc.  I believe it was Forbes Magazine that ranked it the cleanest city to live in.  All across the board Calgary is ranked up in the top cities to live in, eco-friendly, best economy, etc.  Obviously it also ranks #1 in most categories for best City in Canada.

The closest way to describe it’s location is that it’s kind of like Denver but way colder.  What I mean is that you have the Rocky Mountains less than 40 miles from the city center.  This reminds me a lot of Denver with the difference being that it stays below freezing all winter in Calgary.  Temperatures range from double digit negatives to 80’s and 90’s.  There are ten airports and twelve heliports in the area to choose from if you have a private plane.
