Broadaxe – The Art of Hewing

The broadaxe is probably the most important tools that you can have if you are hewing the logs yourself.  Hewing is basically the process from taking a round log and making a flat edge.  This is essential with stacking the locks on top of each other to build your wall.  A broadaxe is used in the final steps to create a much smoother edge to the log for stacking.  You have to make sure its smooth and very flat and the broad axes’ large sharp one sided blade allows you to cut a smooth side to a log.  Check this video out because it actually shows you how you can hew a log completely with a broadaxe.  This guy does it pretty quickly but you get the idea.  If you want to make it more pretty, just take your time with it.

The broadaxe has been used for centuries. During the Iron Age is when the head of axes became much larger with broader blades. It really starts to get a morbid reputation around the 18th and 19th centuries. It was then that it replaced the sword as the preferred method of beheading a human being.

This next video shows you exactly how to create your own broadaxe. It’s a fairly straight forward process but can be both time consuming and frustrating if you don’t know what you are doing.

This is an interesting Ted Talk about the broadaxe
